How Understanding Leads to Action: The Keeper’s Comprehensive Role in Successful Population Management and Collection Planning
Please join members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) for a discussion outlining how animal care staff are part of the big picture in both population management and institutional collection planning. Panelists will provide an overview of AZA’s cooperatively managed animal programs, and will describe how genetics, demographics, welfare, training, animal personalities, and needs are all factors in breeding and transfer decisions. Panelists will also discuss the factors that a facility may take into account when planning their collections and the various components of a strong collection plan.
This will be an excellent opportunity to learn how population management and collection planning decisions filter down in facilities, and how your actions as keepers can, and do, filter up to facilitate success in these processes. Learn how to get more involved and the various resources
available to you. This discussion will help you understand your important role in population management and collection planning and enhance your own professional development.
